General note This work, purporting to be the account of Lewis and Clark's expedition, is in fact merely a compilation of bits and pieces already in print, including parts of Jefferson's Message of 1806, William Clark's letter from Saint Louis, segments of Patrick Gass's diary, a careful plagiarization of portions of Jonathan Carver's Travels, first published in 1778, and sections of Alexander Mackenzie's Voyages.
