Includes records of the counterpart firm in London, Allan & Ellis, as well as those of several subsidiary companies organized in Lynchburg and in Amherst County, Va., for the buying and selling of tobacco. Also includes letters from Charles Ellis, Jr., a student at the University of Virginia in the 1830s, describing his activities there; letters from his brother, Thomas H. Ellis, student at the United States Military Academy; and records (1830-1850) of the James River & Kanawha Company, chartered to build a canal from Richmond westward along the James River. Other correspondents include William Bolling, Archibald Cary, John Hartwell Cocke, Powhatan Ellis, Armistead Gordon, J. B. Harrison, Carter Page, John Randolph, Thomas M. Randolph, and St. George Tucker. Among names found in the ledgers are those of Peter Francisco, James Monroe, Spencer Roane, and William Wickham.
