Polk for Appleton's Cyclopaedia of American Biography; his wife, Elizabeth Davis Bancroft (1803-1886), whose papers relate to conditions in England, France, and Germany during Bancroft's years abroad; her first husband, Alexander Bliss (1792-1827), lawyer and junior partner of Daniel Webster, who is represented by social and business correspondence (including 140 letters, 1816-1827, of Webster); and their son, Alexander Bliss (1827-1896), author, soldier, and secretary of the U.S. legation at Berlin, whose papers concern his service as an officer in the U.S. Quartermaster's Dept. during and after the Civil War and his observations of the social and economic conditions in the U.S. and Europe.
