  <abstract>Letters, including some envelopes, written by Sheldon to family members describing his travels in Europe and the Holy Land.  ALS (1856 December 6; Place Vendome, Paris) addressed to Sheldon's sister, Fanny Ogden Sheldon, contains his observations of Paris, France, and his views about Napoleon III, Emperor of the French; ALS (1856 December 24-1857 January 18) to his mother, Abigail Maxon Sheldon, pertains to his travels in France and Italy and includes observations about Roman historical sites and his visit to the studio of American sculptor Hiram Powers; ALS (1857 February 16; Naples) to his father, Crawford Bernon Sheldon, documents his time in Rome, Italy; ALS (1857 April 19-24; Jerusalem) to Mahlon Ogden pertains to Sheldon's journey by camel caravan from Cairo, Egypt, to Jerusalem; and ALS (1857 May 19; Beyrout) to Sheldon's father describes his Middle East travel experiences.  Subjects include Arab and Bedouin encounters, the Greek Orthodox convent built by Empress Helena (near Mount Sinai), and travel sites associated with Biblical history.  Also includes a partial photocopy of Sylvia Whitehouse Blake's book entitled Family Matters (2010) containing transcripts of the letters and genealogical information about correspondents.</abstract>
