Chiefly correspondence received from family and friends at home during Hackett's Civil War service in Company M, 1st Wisconsin Heavy Artillery Regiment, describing daily life including news of family and friends, courtships, funerals, and illnesses as well as reactions to the war and historic events such as the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Hackett's correspondence depicts camp life and includes his impressions of Washington, D.C., in 1864. Includes correspondence of Hackett's daughters, Edith Hackett Cramer, Carrie Fern Hackett, and Millicent Hackett Maloney, chiefly from the 1890s. Pertains to home life, their work as public school teachers, and current events.
