Chiefly correspondence of Bailey addressed to his family during his service with the 129th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army. Bailey notes movements of the regiment; details of skirmishes and battles in Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia; camp life; clothing, rations, and other supplies; medical care; and family affairs. He describes the aftermath of the Battle of Antietam, Md., 1862, and makes mention of military leaders including Ambrose Everett Burnside, George Brinton McClellan, Irvin McDowell, John Pope, and Fitz-John Porter. Includes two letters detailing actions of the regiment during the Battle of Fredericksburg, Va., 1862, and informing Bailey's family of his death. Also includes several letters (1859 August 12-October 28) from Bailey to his parents concerning personal matters.
