Typescript of diary kept by Abbott during his Civil War service with the 48th New York Infantry Regiment. Abbott describes camp life; regimental movements and skirmishes in Charleston and Hilton Head, S.C., Savannah, Ga., and surrounding areas; and the Union assault of Fort Wagner, Morris Island, S.C., where Abbott was wounded. Includes a typescript of Abbott's letter to his father written from an army hospital at Fort Schuyler, Bronx, New York, N.Y., on the day of his death, Aug. 7, 1863.
