Journal kept by Hall while serving as assistant engineering officer of the USS Alliance (Screw gunboat) on an expedition to Iceland, Norway, Spitsbergen Island, and the Arctic region in search of the missing USS Jeannette (Steamer). Entries describe engine room functions, social activities, culture and economy of the various ports of call, and hunting for deer, walrus, and whales. Other topics include receiving news of President James A. Garfield's assassination, the discovery of human skeletal remains on Spitsbergen Island, and a wedding in Reykjavík, Iceland. Also includes newspaper accounts of the voyage, charts of the course, and a list of the voyages of the Alliance in 1880.
