Reflects Volkogonov's study of significant events and individuals of modern Russian history beginning in the 1870s and 1880s with the births of those participating in events leading to the Russian Revolution and continuing through World War II, the Cold War, and perestroĭka into the mid-1990s. Documents major internal historical events in the development of the Soviet Union and its empire as well as foreign relations and external events of the period. Subjects include communism, psychology and effects of absolute power, and the communist party and the armed forces in modern Russia.
