Correspondence; memoranda; minutes; reports; conference notes and proceedings; field notes and research files; drafts of lectures, articles, books, and reviews; and subject and project files documenting Métraux's career in anthropology and particularly her professional and personal relationship with anthropologist Margaret Mead. Projects documented include the "Image of the Scientist" survey conducted by Mead and Métraux among high school students in the late 1950s (including questions on the reaction of adults and children in America and Canada to the launching of Sputnik); the "Allopsychic Orientation" project (circa 1959) in which the two investigated differing perceptions of space, time, and the unknown in the United States, Bali, Montserrat, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan, Samoa, and elsewhere; and the "Cultural Structure of Imagery" project (1965) in which Métraux explored the cultural differences in communication evident in body motion, music, and speech. Other topics of study include adoption, Caribbean peasant cultures in Haiti and Montserrat, clerical and lay attitudes toward race, the French national character, higher education, Mexican food habits, outdoor recreation, projective testing, and regional planning.
Organizations represented include the American Museum of Natural History and the Institute for Intercultural Studies. Métraux's chief correspondent is Margaret Mead. Other correspondents include Theodora Mead Abel, Jane Belo, Edith Cobb, Kenneth Pike Emory, Max Gluckman, Geoffrey Gorer, M. Inez Hilger, Margaret Lowenfeld, William E. Mitchell, and family members Annamarie Bubendey Epple, Daniel Metraux, and Guy S. Métraux. Other persons represented include Ruth Benedict and Alfred Métraux.
