Personal and business correspondence, project files, speeches, writings, biographical material, and scrapbooks documenting Gruen's career in architectural design, city planning, and environmental counseling, with special emphasis on architectural and land use projects undertaken from 1960 to 1980 by his firms, Gruen Associates, headquartered in New York and Los Angeles, and Victor Gruen International, centered in Vienna, Austria. Project files are most extensive for design of the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium and the city plan for Vienna, Austria. The firm's efforts to revitalize the central business districts of Fort Worth, Tex., Rochester, N.Y., Kalamazoo, Mich., Boston, Mass., Fresno, Calif., Urbana, Ill., and other American and European cities are also documented. Other topics include planning new towns, regional planning, general land development, public housing projects, and designs for college campuses. There is also material on the establishment of the Victor Gruen Foundation for Environmental Planning in Los Angeles and its sister organization, Zentrum für Umweltplanung in Vienna. Designer, architect, and urban planner. Born in Vienna, Austria, as Victor David Grünbaum. Changed name after emigrating to the United States in 1938. Returned to Vienna in 1967, where he died in 1980.
