Journal kept by Bodega y Cuadra as Spanish commander of a naval expedition from San Blas, Mexico, to Nootka Sound on the coast of Alta California (now British Columbia) that was sent to ascertain the extent of British and Russian penetration into the Northwest Pacific coast. Includes his account of the treaty negotiations (known as the Nootka Convention) with George Vancouver that led to the transfer of the Spanish outpost on Nootka Sound to Great Britain in 1795. Includes a list of Latin names compiled by José Mariano Moziño and José María Maldonado of flora and fauna found on the expedition, glossary of Nootka Indian words, and two folding logs recording weather, wind, latitudes, and longitudes during the voyage.
