Includes eleven Abraham Lincoln manuscripts and letters of Civil War commanders such as Jefferson Columbus Davis, Richard Stoddert Ewell, James Lawson Kemper, Edmund Kirby-Smith, and Robert E. Lee.  Journal kept by Bates while he served as manager of the War Department telegraph office in Washington, D.C., serves as a record of military intelligence activities in the Civil War and of military telegraphic communication.  Other correspondents include Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Thompson Eckert, and Robert Todd Lincoln.
