Chiefly papers collected by Alice Bache Gould relating to the history of Puerto Rico together with her own correspondence, writings, and bibliographic material. Includes papers of Rufo Manuel Fernández Carballido, priest and professor of logic and metaphysics, consisting of notes and essays on science, religion, and education in Puerto Rico and a journal (1837) of his trip to the United States; papers of Román Baldorioty de Castro relating to politics and his presidency of the Partido Autonomista Puerto-Riqueño from 1887 to 1889; and manuscript volume, formerly owned by Baldorioty de Castro, containing an account (1765) by Alejandro O'Reilly, a Spanish general, describing the population, resources, and future of Puerto Rico. Also includes letters (1890) written by Ramón Emeterio Betances, physician and Caribbean political activist, during his exile in Paris, France.
