  <abstract>Collection organized in an Abraham Lincoln file and a Caleb Cushing file.  The Lincoln file contains correspondence (1861-1865), copy of a promissory note endorsed by Lincoln, and lithographic portrait of Lincoln during his presidency.  The correspondence includes letters to Lincoln primarily requesting government posts or military promotions, letters of John Hay on Lincoln's behalf, and letters and documents mentioning Lincoln.  The Cushing file contains letters written by Cushing and several letters addressed to Cushing (1822-1876), draft of a legal opinion by Cushing, and photographic portrait of Cushing from the 1850s.  The correspondence pertains to legal, political, and business matters throughout Cushing's career.</abstract>
