Correspondence, diary, notebook, bills, indentures, newspapers, and clippings of the Pope family. Consists chiefly of Civil War letters addressed to Lucy A. Pope from her son, Augustus Russell Pope, of the 1st and 11th Massachusetts Volunteers, from camps in New York and Virginia. His diary (1862) kept as a captain's aide concerns camp life in the 44th Massachusetts Infantry at Readville, Mass. Also includes correspondence and other papers of his brother, Lemuel Pope, who served in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War. A bound volume contains letters and signatures of presidents, senators, army and navy officers, governors, literary figures, scientists, clergyman, mayors, and others from the 1860s including Louis Agassiz, James Buchanan, Millard Fillmore, James A. Garfield, Rutherford B. Hayes, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Charles Sumner.


Family members represented include Lucy A. Pope and her sons, Augustus Russell Pope and Lemuel Pope.
