Documents his activities on behalf of various progressive reform causes, commitment to socialism and humanitarianism, writing career, and interest in music and literature, especially poetry.  Includes material pertaining to Russell's assignment with Everybody's Magazine for a series of articles on economic conditions in foreign countries and travels as a presidential appointee to England and Russia, especially as a member of a special diplomatic mission to Russia led by Elihu Root in 1917.  Subjects include World War I in Europe, travels in Europe and East Asia, Ireland and Irish independence, the Philippines, prominent Filipinos, Palestine, and Zionism. Other subjects include agribusiness, civil rights, labor unions, lumber trusts, prison reform, railroads, and women's suffrage.
