  <abstract>Papers of Thomas Ewing (1789-1871) consist primarily of records from the Washington, D.C., law office which he operated with his son, Thomas Ewing (1829-1886), and Orville Hickman Browning.  Records pertain to courts martial and land claims; business and land transactions primarily in Leavenworth, Kans.; pardons and amnesty after the Civil War; claims against the military and for restoration of property; and Ewing's representation of Samuel Arnold in his trial as a co-conspirator in the attempt to assassinate Abraham Lincoln, circa 1865.</abstract>
  <abstract>Papers of Charles Ewing consist of correspondence, a diary, military records, scrapbooks, and records relating to the law offices of Ewing &amp; Hunter in St. Louis, Mo., and Ewing &amp; Jackson in Washington, D.C.  Subjects include the Civil War and its aftermath, especially the military circle formed by brothers, Charles Ewing, Hugh Ewing, and Thomas Ewing (1829-1896), and their brothers-in-law, William T. Sherman and Clement F. Steele.  Legal records pertain to cotton claims following the Civil War, courts-martial and other military claims, land grant claims, Mexican claims, patent rights, and U.S. Office of Indian Affairs claims.</abstract>
  <abstract>Papers of Virginia Larwill Miller Ewing are comprised of correspondence and scrapbooks pertaining to family life, genealogy, social events, and church activities.</abstract>
