Francis P. Blair's papers primarily document his editorship and publication of the Globe and Congressional Globe in Washington, D.C.,  his association with Martin Van Buren, and his secret meeting with Jefferson Davis in Richmond, Va. (January 1865) to negotiate a compromise ending the Civil War.  Montgomery Blair's papers include his files concerning slavery in western territories and free states, his legal files as counsel in Dred Scott v. Sanford, records from his Washington, D.C., law firm relating primarily to land patents and grants in the western United States, papers relating to his service as U.S. postmaster general in the Lincoln administration, and correspondence pertaining to national, Maryland, and party politics and to military affairs chiefly during the Civil War.  The papers of Frank P. Blair, Jr., include Civil War letters and documents and several speeches and papers documenting his service as U.S. representative and senator from Missouri.  Gist Blair's papers consist primarily of his research file on the Blair family and of the correspondence and research files of William E. Smith, author of The Francis Preston Blair Family in Politics (1933).  Includes a political diary (1840-1843) and other papers of Levi Woodbury.  Family correspondence documents the political and social scene in St. Louis, Mo., and Washington, D.C. (1850s-1870s), economic and social conditions in the South during Reconstruction, and family matters.  Papers of Woodbury Blair chiefly concern the settlement of the estate of Montgomery and Mary Elizabeth Woodbury Blair.  Other papers include a ledger (1822-1826) maintained by Charles Q. Clapp, a merchant in Portland, Maine, and financial records (1838-1860) of Maryland governor Samuel Stevens.  Correspondents include Blair family members and extended relations including Mary Elizabeth Woodbury Blair, Gustavus V. and Virginia (Woodbury) Fox, Samuel P. and Elizabeth Blair Lee, Minna Blair Richey, and the Gratz family of Philadelphia, Pa.
