  <abstract>Correspondence, journals, diaries, scrapbooks, printed matter, memorabilia, photographs, and other papers relating to the Ohio family of "Fighting McCooks" which became prominent through the service of fifteen of its sons in the Civil War.  The McCooks were active in legal, military, and political affairs.  The bulk of the collection concerns the military and political career of Anson G. McCook, U.S. representative from New York, secretary of the U.S. Senate, and Union Army officer.  Among the correspondents are Cornelius Newton Bliss, Grover Cleveland, Robley D. Evans, Hamilton Fish, James A. Garfield, Ulysses S. Grant, Marcus Alonzo Hanna, Benjamin Harrison, Rutherford Birchard Hayes, William McKinley, Thomas Nelson Page, Theodore Roosevelt, Elihu Root, William T. Sherman, Edwin McMasters Stanton, and Mark Twain.</abstract>
