Newspaper clippings form the bulk of the collection.  Subjects include U.S. and foreign navies and naval officers, ships, arms and armor, naval educational institutions, the merchant marine, disasters at sea, marine natural history, Arctic explorations in the 1890s, the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, the Sino-Japanese War, 1894-1895, and the Spanish-American War, 1898.  Includes correspondence with Powel's father, Samuel Powel, and other Powel (Powell) family members.  Other correspondents include autograph and book dealers, Walter Romeyn Benjamin and M. Bruckner; and naval officers including Stephen Bleecker Luce.</abstract>
