A two-part series on the Leipzig period of J.S. Bach's creative life as composer, the major landmark of which are his cantatas. With the support of documentary evidence and using the city of Leipzig with its ancient Church of St. Thomas as backdrop, the film shows how the Leipzig cantatas were composed, copied into manuscripts and performed in Bach's lifetime. Includes a full performance of the Ascension oratorio, and the start of a reconstructed Lutheran service of Bach's time.
