Journal (1881-1882) kept by Wadleigh while serving on two voyages as commander of the USS Alliance (Screw gunboat). The primary purpose of the 1881 voyage was to search for the missing USS Jeannette (Steamer) in the Arctic region around Iceland, Norway, and Spitsbergen. The secondary purpose was to collect scientific data. Entries contain observations of terrain, auroras, ice and sea conditions, and detailed meteorological statistics. Also includes two sketches and a map. The 1882 entries describe a coal trading voyage to the West Indies and Central America. Includes ship's papers from two other ships on which Wadleigh served, the USS Ticonderoga (Sloop of war), 1865-1869, and the USS Shawmut (Screw gunboat), 1872-1873.
