Chiefly drafts and research files for two of Lewis's books, Gideon's Trumpet (1964), an analysis of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Gideon v. Wainwright that required states to provide indigent criminal defendants with free counsel, and Portrait of a Decade; the Second American Revolution (1964), an examination of the civil rights movement from 1954 to 1964. Also includes correspondence, speeches, reports, letters from readers of his New York Times column, photographs, and other papers. Subjects include political and social issues such as busing for racial integration of schools, crime and drugs, medicine and health care, student protests, the Vietnam War, and Watergate.
