The diary relates to Barnes' college days at Wheaton, Ill.; his military service as a captain in the U.S. Army 72nd Illinois Infantry Regiment; his work with the Freedmen's Bureau in Mississippi; his law practice in Hannibal, Mo.; and his interest in the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860.
