Includes material pertaining to the Civil War service of John Charles Frémont as commander in charge of the U.S. Army's Western Department and Mountain Department and to the service of Major George E. Waring who replaced Frémont as commander of the Mountain Department. Correspondents include Henry Ward Beecher, Edward William Bok, Robert Underwood Johnson, T.W. Park, and Joel Roberts Poinsett.
