The collection relates primarily to Rush's duties as attorney general (1814-1817), secretary of state (1817), minister to Great Britain (1817-1825), and secretary of the treasury (1825-1828). Also includes legal documents concerning a loan from the Netherlands to finance the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company in and near Washington, D.C.
