Documents his participation in the West African Eclipse Expedition (1880s). Also includes Abbe (Abbey) family genealogical material and correspondence with family members particularly his brother, Robert Abbe; correspondence with Benjamin Apthorp Gould whom Cleveland Abbe assisted in the telegraphic longitude work of the U.S. Coast Survey at Cambridge, Mass.; and correspondence with Otto Struve, former director of the Glavnai͡a astronomicheskai͡a observatorii͡a, Pulkovo, Russia, where Abbe was a guest astronomer (1865-1866).
