ALS (1856 February 25 & March 14) written by Nichols while master of the ship Sophia Thornton of New Bedford, Mass., on a whaling voyage to the South Pacific. Nichols discussed the dearth of whales and the dependency of the economy on whaling. While taking on supplies at the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, Nichols commented on the region's inhabitants.
