Subjects include African American literature and culture, poetry readings and festivals, Emanuel's career as an educator primarily at the City College of the City University of New York and the Université de Grenoble, France, and his role as cultural ambassador for the U.S. in various European countries. Other topics include Emanuel's service in the U.S. Army and his election campaign (1966) for the Board of Education in Mount Vernon, N.Y.
